April Duvic

April Brookins Duvic received her Bachelor of Arts in Music, cum laude, from Whitman College and her Masters of Science in Teaching from Portland State University. She has been on staff at Clark College in Vancouver, Washington since 1990, and was the 2001 recipient of the Exceptional Faculty Award, the college’s award for academic excellence. She teaches Applied Voice, Music Education (MUS 105 – Music in Early Childhood), and Music Appreciation (MUS 128) and is director of the acclaimed Clark College Women’s Choral Ensemble, which has performed in China, Mexico, Canada, Hawaii, and the Pacific Northwest. She assumed the position of Concert Choir director for the 2004-2005 school year.

An active member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) and the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA), Ms. Duvic serves as an adjudicator and clinician at both solo vocal and choral festivals in Idaho, Oregon and Washington. Her students regularly participate in NATS sponsored master classes and the annual student auditions. She has received recognition from the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) as the teacher of two MTNA performance competition national winners, Maliea Yakymi, 2002-2003 and Josh McCall, 2000-2001.

Active in musical theatre at Clark College and in the Vancouver area, she has received awards for her musical direction of Evita and West Side Story. Ms. Duvic has been featured as a vocal soloist with the Clark College Orchestra and was a member of the Leyden Singers, the Oregon Symphony’s Vocal Pops ensemble. She performs regularly with her singing partner, Vanessa Jump Nelson, in the duo, “Duelin’ Sopranos” (www.duelinsopranos.com), and together they have recorded two CDs.

The first, “Duelin’ Sopranos – Christmas Joy” was selected as a top pick for 2003 by ChristmasReviews.com, an online holiday recording review service.  Their second CD, “Under Her Spell: The Viardot Effect” won fourth place in the 2004 Best Album of the year in the Opera/Classical Vocal category by “Just Plain Folks” an international Songwriting & Musician Networking Organization.

Her teachers have included Gwen Leonard, Susan McBerry, Winnifred Ringhoffer, and Richard Miller in workshop settings.
